F.A.Q. : Frequently Asked Questions

Q) Where did you get that name?
A) I believe it was 1997-1998'ish when we met an individual with the name Lorien. Marcy fell in LOVE with the name and swore her first girl would bear that name.

Q) What does the name Lorien mean?
A1) A derivative of the name Laura, which comes from the word "Laurel". In the ancient world, laurel leaves were used to fashion the crowns of victorious athletes, poets and soldiers. As the Roman poet Ovid explains,
"This practice had its origins in the story of the god Apollo's pursuit of the beautiful nymph Daphne. Scorning his advances, she ran from him until he overcame her. She called on Peneus the river god for help, and he transformed her into a laurel tree. Apollo still loved her, and took her leaves as his special symbol. As he was the god of poetry, music, science and just about every other human accomplishment, laurel crowns came to be used to adorn Apollo's champions."
A2) Also mentioned in J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings". I have come across many "loose translations" of the word "Lorien". They include the following : Dreamflower, Garden of Dreams, God of Dreams, and Golden Paradise. Lorien was originally used by Tolkien for the elven equivalent of the Elysian Fields and then for the elven kingdom where time does not bring decay.

Q) Hmmm I have heard that name before... and it wasn't in a Tolkin book... where have I heard it?
A) Perhaps.. "Babylon 5" - Lorien, the first sentient being, who is also immortal.
